Senior Photo Prop Ideas: Tips for Seniors + Photographers to Make your Sessions More Personalized

For every senior session, I have one main goal: to create photos that feel exactly like them. I want to understand who they are, what they love, and bring that to life in a way that feels natural and meaningful. Every single person is so unique!!!!!!

Their gifts, talents, and experiences all shape who they are, and their photos should reflect that:)

I truly believe every senior session should feel personalized. That’s why I give my clients the freedom to choose their locations and outfits, and why I position myself as a resource to help bring their vision to life. It’s also why I have them fill out a questionnaire before their session—it’s the first touchpoint where they can start sharing who they are.

HOWEVER- one thing I’ve realized in my years of senior photography is this:

Most seniors don’t actually know what to bring to their session—or even what they want their photos to look like.

And that’s not a bad thing… it’s actually an opportunity!!

Because THIS is where you can provide the MOST value as a photographer:))

A senior might say in their questionnaire, “I love my dog so much,” or “I love to draw,” but then leave the prop section blank. Not because those things don’t matter…. but because they’re not naturally thinking in visuals, and they don’t always know what’s possible!

THIS is where we as photographers get to step in!!

This is where we can say say, “Wait- what if we brought your dog and captured you playing catch or running around?” or “What if you brought your sketchbook/pencils and created some art in a field during golden hour?”

THIS IS WHERE THE MAGIC HAPPENS!!!

It’s not just about showing up and taking photos- it’s about seeing people, pulling out what makes them them, and creating a vision they might not have even imagined for themselves.

THAT’s what makes a session feel so personal and meaningful, and honestly, that’s how you go from just taking pretty pictures to giving your clients an experience they’ll never forget 🤍

So in this post, I’m sharing some of my favorite senior photo prop ideas (and how to actually use them) to help you create more personalized, creative, and meaningful senior sessions.

I've separated it into 3 categories for easiest viewing:

Meaningful Props:

Bible:

This might be one of my favorite props to incorporate. There’s something so special about seeing a senior’s well-loved, marked-up Bible during a session!! It tells a story all on its own. I love seeing this generation have such a genuine heart for the Lord! He is working some mighty miracles, and these seniors are making a big difference because of their faith.

Tips for using it:

For the Client-

Bring your most meaningful, well-used Bible—the one that’s full of notes, highlights, and pages that have been loved. Not only does this add so much personality, but it also gives your photographer more opportunities for creative, detail-focused shots.

For the Photographer-

There are so many beautiful ways to photograph this. One of my favorite things to do is ask the senior what their favorite verse is (it’s usually already highlighted). From there, you can shoot from a unique angle- like over the shoulder- and capture something that feels both creative and deeply meaningful.

Dogs:

For most people, their dog is like another member of the family! If a client mentions how much they love their dog in their questionnaire, I’ll almost always suggest incorporating them into the session.

Tips for working with dogs:

For the client- Give your dog a bath before the session so they’re clean and photo-ready! I also recommend bringing treats, water, a leash, a towel for muddy paws (trust me on this one), and even an extra person to help handle them.

For the photographer- Set expectations ahead of time. I usually recommend that a parent or friend brings the dog to one location for about 15–30 minutes, rather than having them there the entire session. This keeps things fun and stress-free for everyone, and allows you to stay focused while still getting those meaningful shots.

Family & Friends:

Personally, I can’t imagine not including a few photos with family or close friends. These are the people who have shaped your senior’s life the most, and capturing those relationships adds so much meaning to a session!!

Tips for including others:

For the client- Bring the people you feel most comfortable with- parents, siblings, or a couple of really close friends. The more relaxed you feel around them, the more natural your photos will be!

For the Photographer- If you offer this, be clear about it from the beginning. I mention it in my senior experience guide and then usually send a quick message before the session saying something like, “You’re more than welcome to grab a few photos with anyone who comes!” This gives family members a heads up if they want to look nice for the photos and makes them feel included- which they always appreciate:)

Cars:

Cars are actually such a fun and underrated prop. You can get so much variety and creativity with them, especially when you use your environment well.

Tips for using cars:

For the client- Clean your car inside and out before your session—it makes a huge difference in photos!

For the photographer- I like to shoot in open areas like dirt lots or spacious parking areas where there’s room to move around and get different angles. If you’re going to multiple locations, I usually start with the car so it doesn’t get dirty along the way. Look for places with minimal distractions and plenty of background variety.

Creative/Aesthetic Props:

Flowers:

A bouquet is such a classic, and always a good idea!!! It adds softness, color, and movement to your photos. You can even get creative with it and add the flowers to pockets, overalls, or stick them in boots!

Tips-

Fresh flowers photograph best, but they can wilt quickly (especially in the summer). If you can, keep them in water in a vase, or wrap the stems in a damp paper towel. Try to keep them in the shade until you’re ready to use them. You can also buy something like Crowning Glory Flower Spray to seal moisture into fresh flowers and prevent them from wilting.

Don't be afraid of fake flowers or even better- pick wildflowers on location!

And small side note: when your client is walking with them, make sure the blooms are facing the camera- not the stems:) See the bottom left photo for reference.

Books:

If I could redo my own senior session, I would 100% bring a stack of cute, aesthetic books. They add such a fun pop of color and personality.

Tips- You can thrift vintage books for a unique look, or find beautifully designed classics at places like Barnes & Noble. Even just a small stack can add so much to a scene.

Lights:

I used to LOVE incorporating different types of lighting into my sessions- it adds such a dreamy, creative feel!

Tips- Look for fairy lights with a battery pack like these ones so they’re easy to move around and use anywhere!

Prism:

Prisms are such a fun way to experiment and get unique, artistic effects in-camera. They’re simple, but can completely transform a shot. Here's a link to the one I've used!

Personality-Based Props:

Musical Instruments:

I love when seniors want to incorporate their instruments!! I’ve photographed guitars,

trumpets, drums, and violins!

( My dream one day is to bring a piano into the middle of a wheat field during golden hour, cover it in baby’s breath, and photograph a senior playing in a full, soft pink dress….. ohhhh what a dream;)

Tips- I like to get ideas from Pinterest beforehand for instruments. Try to go beyond having them just playing the instrument, and grab little close ups that capture a feeling, emotion, or vibe that feels like the senior. You can also mix in posed shots with the instrument for variety.

Sports:

Sports are often a huge part of a senior’s identity!! If they mention a sport, it’s a great opportunity to incorporate it into their session.

Tips- You can shoot at a field, court, or even just bring elements of the sport with you (like a ball, gear, etc.). Try to get a mix of posed and action shots to really capture their personality and energy.

Letterman Jacket:

This is a common request I get from seniors! Love the different colors and memories!

Tips- Letterman jackets can be bulky, so pay close attention to how they’re sitting. I like to drape it over one shoulder or slide it slightly off for a more flattering, relaxed look. Take your time adjusting- it makes a big difference in the final image:)

Other props I've used over the years: chairs (renting vintage furniture can be super fun!), American Flags, stools, blankets, and so much more!

Now please remember!!!!! Props aren’t just accessories. They’re a way to tell your client’s story.

As you keep that in mind, it will change the way you take photos.

Hopefully this post didn’t just give you a list of prop ideas, it helped you start thinking about props-and your client experience- as something even much deeper:)

At the end of the day, everything we do as photographers is about creating something meaningful. Whether you’re photographing seniors, families, or weddings, our job goes far beyond taking pretty photos- we get the opportunity to truly see people, understand who they are, and bring their personality to life.

And that starts long before the session ever happens.

From your very first interaction with a client, you’re building trust! You’re creating connection. You’re showing them that you genuinely care about who they are, not just what they look like on camera.

Because the truth is, the more connected your client feels to you, the more comfortable they’ll be… and the better your photos will be.

An unforgettable client experience starts with you.

It starts with taking the time to care, asking thoughtful questions, and going above and beyond to create something that feels personal. When you do that, you’re not just delivering photos- you’re giving your clients an experience they’ll remember for years.

Client experience is something I’m incredibly passionate about as a senior photographer, and it’s something I’m always working to refine and grow in.

If this is an area you’re wanting to improve in your own business- whether that’s creating more personalized sessions, building stronger connections with your clients, or learning how to bring a full vision to life- I offer 1:1 mentorships where I walk through my entire process with you, step-by-step!!:)

And if you’re wanting your photos to have that same warm, natural look you see throughout this post, I also have presets that I use on all of my sessions:)

I’m always happy to help however I can—so if you have any questions about client experience, senior sessions, or anything photography-related, feel free to reach out 🤍

Thank you all for joining me as I strive to help educate as many photographers as possible through these little blog posts!!! I love teaching and I loveeee creating a community of other like-minded humans!!

Hope you all are having the most blessed day:)
